EAST BEND — On paper, the Forbush Falcons baseball team had the perfect set up to go all the way in the 2A NCHSAA Playoffs. As things sometimes go in the playoffs, the outcome of a game doesn’t always reflect the standings. The Falcons had a come-from-behind third round win over West Stanly, then fell in the fourth round to Lake Norman to end its season with a 24-4 record.

Forbush 9 – West Stanly 4

In a game that saw a head coach being ejected, a player jumping over the catcher to score the go-ahead run, and a student section that came out in full force, the Forbush Falcons took a 9-4 win in the third round of the 2A playoffs on Tuesday night. The Falcons and West Stanly battled back and forth until Forbush was able to take the lead for good in the sixth inning.

Forbush started things off with a one run lead in the bottom of the first inning as Jamie Sheek scored off of a Blake Winebarger walk. West Stanly took the lead in the top of the second as it scored three runs. Forbush was able to score one run in the bottom of the third as Carter Foster scored off of Peyton Winebarger’s sacrifice fly to left field. The fifth inning saw West Stanly score its final run of the night to take a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Forbush tied the game 4-4. Foster doubled to center field to score Landreth Cockerham, then Foster scored on an error to tie the game. In the bottom of the sixth, Forbush turned up its momentum and put the game out of West Stanly’s reach.

Sheek started the inning off with a single to shortstop, which Tyler Campbell followed up with a double to center field. As Sheek was rounding third, the center fielder threw the ball in which was relayed to the catcher. It looked as though Sheek was about to be thrown out when things got interesting. As the catcher went to catch the ball, Sheek jumped over the catcher and was able to touch home plate before he was tagged. The play lit a fire in the Forbush dugout and fan area, as the Falcons took the lead and the momentum from West Stanly. Forbush was able to score four more runs before the inning was completed to take a 9-4 lead. West Stanly was unable to make a comeback in the top of the seventh and the Falcons took a 9-4 win to move on to the fourth round.

Lake Norman 4 – Forbush 1

After an incredible playoff run, the Forbush Falcons baseball team saw its season come to an end on Friday night at the hands of Lake Norman Charter. The Falcons hosted the Knights in fourth round of the NCHSAA 2A Playoffs. The Knights scored one run early and never looked back as it handed the Falcons a 4-1 season ending loss.

In the first inning the Knights were able to score off of a solo home run over the center field fence. In the bottom of the first and second, Forbush could not fine its groove as it went three-up three-down in both innings. In the top of the third, Lake Norman came away with two additional runs to make the score 3-0.

In the bottom of the third, the Falcons once again went three-up three-down with three ground outs. Forbush was able to get its first runner on base in the bottom of the fourth as Jamie Sheek hit a ground ball to third base to come up with a single. Sheek was unable to make his way around the bases as the next three batters found popped out, struck out, and flew out.

In the top of the seventh inning, Lake Norman scored its final run of the night to make the score 4-0. Things started to come down to the wire for the Falcons as the end of the game was looming. Carter Foster started things off with a single to third base, which was followed up with a walk by Blake Winebarger. Peyton Winebarger saw two pitches before flying out to right field for the first out. With runners on first and second, Wesley Wood took a walk to load the bases for the Falcons. Jacob Shore struck out for the second Forbush out and left the bases loaded.

With two outs, Alex Boyles saw three balls before being hit by a pitch. Boyles’ walk brought in a run for the Falcons and left the bases loaded with the tying run on first. Things felt as though they were about to fall Forbush’s way, but Lake Norman had a different idea. On a 3-1 count, Tanner Gregory grounded out to the shortstop to come up with the third out. The Falcons’ season came to an end in the fourth round.

Forbush didn’t leave the season empty handed, as it took home the regular season Western Piedmont Athletic Cconference championship, and the WPAC tournament championship. The Falcons will graduate six seniors this year — Cameron Lyons, Jamie Sheek, Tyler Campbell, Jackson Cooper, Travis Gardner and Jesse Armstrong.
