GREENSBORO — The Powerade State Games baseball games were held at the UNC Greensboro baseball stadium last week. Five local athletes made the roster for Region 7 East Wilkes’ Bryce Vestal and Forbush’s Blake Winebarger, Peyton Winebarger and Carter Foster.
Region 7 didn’t have the week it was looking for as it ended the tournament with an 1-3 record. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Region 7 took losses. On the last day of the tournament, Region 7 was able to come away with an 8-1 win over Region 4.
In the first game against Region 5, Foster started in right field, Blake Winebarger started on second, and Bryce Vestal was the designated hitter. Region 7 started the game off strong, but Region 5 was able to take an early lead before taking an 11-0 win. Region 5 would go on to eventually win the silver medal.
In the second game of the tournament, Region 7 was able to score four runs and keep up with its opponents until Region 6 came from behind to score several runs. Region 6 took a 9-4 win to move Region 7’s overall record to 0-2. On Saturday morning, Region 7 took on Region 1. Peyton Winebarger came in as a closer on the mound for Region 7 and gave an impressive performance. Winebarger tapped his highest fastball at 84 mph and threw a variety of pitches to earn a few strikeouts. While Winebarger’s performance on the mound was impressive, Region 7 was unable to overcome Region 1 and took a 6-2 loss.
With the final day of the tournament underway, Region 7 was finally able to earn an 8-1 win over Region 4. Region 7 ended its Powerade State Games with a record of 1-3. Region 7 was coached by Forbush head coach Jack Moss.
