Week three football previews

Week three of the 2017 football season will kick off on Friday night with Forbush and Starmount in action.

Forbush (1-1) at East Wilkes (2-0)

The Forbush Falcons will travel to Ronda to take on the East Wilkes Cardinals. Last season East Wilkes took a 45-7 win over Forbush.

The Falcons are coming off a solid 37-13 win over North Iredell, while East Wilkes remains undefeated after beating Surry Central 52-14. This week’s match-up will be a tough one for the Falcons as East Wilkes has shown just how good of a football team it is this season.

On defense, the Falcons will have to stop East Wilkes quarterback Bryce Vestal. Vestal has shown that he will do what it takes to earn the tough yards and make hard plays. If the Falcons can get a handle on Vestal’s playing style, then things could fall Forbush’s way. Other players the Falcons will have to keep an eye out for are Deven Couch and Damien Reid. Both players have speed that could hurt the Falcons on Friday night.

On offense, Forbush will have to rely on its passing game to make it to the end zone. Blake Winebarger has the perfect opportunity to be able to show just how good his arm is on Friday night. On defense, the Cardinals have one of the biggest lines in 1A football, which makes the running game tough for their opponents. While the Cardinals have a big defensive line, the Falcons have shown they can run the ball time and time again.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Ronda. The Yadkin Ripple will have play-by-play action on Twitter @YadkinElkSports.

West Stokes (1-1) at Starmount (0-2)

Friday night is the first home game of the season for the Starmount Rams as they host West Stokes in Boonville.

The Rams are coming off of a 39-20 loss to East Surry, while West Stokes is coming off of a 35-20 loss to Mount Airy. Both teams will be looking to earn a win on Friday night.

Starmount has struggled on defense as it fails to make vital stops on third down. During Friday night’s game, the Rams will have to buckle down and make tough plays on defense to stop West Stokes from making drives down the field.

On offense, the Rams have to rely on their strength once again. Getting the passing game started early could be the key for the Rams. With a strong run game, Starmount has the ground covered. The offensive line will need to give the Starmount quarterbacks time in the pocket to make important pass plays.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Boonville.
