RONDA — The Lady Rams of Starmount traveled a short distance up the road for their final conference match against East Wilkes on Friday night. The Lady Rams jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and cruised home with a 3-1 victory.

The Lady Rams and Lady Cardinals traded attack and counter-attack for the first 14 minutes with the Lady Rams getting the better of the shot selections but not finding the back of the goal. The Lady Rams were finally able to score as Molly Maske scored off the assist of her sister, Claire Maske, to give the Lady Rams a 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, the Lady Rams earned a corner kick and took advantage as Sierra Casstevens sent a nice delivered ball into the East Wilkes box, where Claire Maske headed the ball into the goal for a 2-0 Lady Rams lead.

The Lady Rams would get their third goal from an own goal by East Wilkes. Starmount’s Sierra Casstevens was credited with the goal as she was the last Lady Ram to touch the ball. The half would end with the Lady Rams leading 3-0.

“I thought we did a good job of establishing how we wanted to play and we took control of the midfield in the first half. The second half was a different story as both teams competed for the midfield,” said head coach Dale Draughn of Starmount. “We had a bunch of shots on goal but could not find the back of the net, or goals were called back due to offside. Anna did a solid job in goal in the second half for East Wilkes.”

The Lady Cardinals cut into the Lady Rams’ lead with 10:41 to go when the Rams did not clear a ball successfully in their defensive third. The Lady Cardinals scored as Leah Nance recorded the goal for the final score of 3-1.

The win improves the Lady Rams’ overall record to 13-6-1 and their conference record to 11-3. Starmount will host Swain County on Wednesday afternoon for the first round of the NCHSAA 1A playoffs. Results were not available at press time.
