RONDA — The Starmount Lady Rams came out swinging in their 8-3 win over East Wilkes on a rainy Friday night. After a brief rain delay, the Rams were able to hold on to earn an important Mountain Valley Athletic Conference win.
Starmount took a 1-0 lead off of a Shea Triplett RBI in the first inning to start things off on the right foot for the Rams. Triplett hit the ball to Lyric Ryan at shortstop who proceeded to throw the ball to first base for the out. After stealing second and third, Kendra King scored off of Triplett’s RBI. It would be the lone run for the Rams as the Cards shaped up on defense and were able to make key plays for the final two outs.
In the top of the third inning, Starmount came out swinging. Kayla Vanhoy found a single with a ground ball hit to center field. Kendall Crouch made a sacrifice bunt for the first out of the inning, which moved Vanhoy to second. Kennedy White stepped up to the plate with one out and made her hit count as she smashed the ball into left field. Vanhoy was able to round the bases to score, as White earned a double.
The Rams were not done scoring as King hit a fly ball to left field to earn a single and advance White to third. With a 1-1 count on Triplett, White stole home to make the score 3-0. Triplett found her hit on the next pitch to bring King in for an additional run for Starmount. The Rams took a 4-0 lead leading into the bottom of the third inning. East Wilkes tried to answer back at the plate, but the Cardinals were unable to find the hits they needed.
The fifth inning saw East Wilkes score its first run of the night. Starmount added one run in the fifth inning to make the score 5-1. With the end of the game in sight, the Cardinals found a run as Marissa Burchette hit a line drive single to bring Lauren Rakes across the plate. With the score 5-1, the rest of the fifth and sixth innings saw little action.
In the final inning, both teams fought for the coveted conference win. Starmount tacked on three runs as King singled to right field to score Crouch, Triplett singled to left field to score White, and King scored herself to make the score 8-1.
East Wilkes was able to make things exciting as it scored two runs but failed to capitalize when needed. Rakes scored off of a single by Burchette, and Brie Jarvis scored off of a walk. The Cardinals left the bases loaded to end the seventh inning, and the Rams took an 8-3 win.
Kayla Vanhoy had seven strikeouts for the Rams, and went 1-for-4 at the plate. On the batting side, White went 2-for-3, and King went 3-for-4.
With the win, Starmount takes a 9-6 overall record and an 8-3 MVAC record.
